Ammonia is a nitrous compound present in nature in the form of gas and is dilutable in water, forming a very active and toxic substance. Ammonia is very important for industry, being used for the production of nylon and synthetic fibers, explosives and plastic material, for bleaches, a component of paints, a base for agricultural fertilizers, as a coolant and for much more.

However, ammonia is also available in supermarkets for many household uses; this product, suitably diluted and used carefully, can in fact be used to clean and sanitize the home and has a strong degreasing power, which makes it very useful for cleaning stoves, ovens, windows, mirrors, hoods, grills and greasy floors.

First of all, a clarification is needed: if you choose to use ammonia in your washing machine, pay the utmost attention not to mix it with bleach, to avoid creating an extremely harmful compound. And always use it diluted, wearing gloves to protect your hands from even accidental contact. Also, ventilate the room during and after use. But what is ammonia used for in the washing machine?

Ammonia is a very effective stain remover which, unlike bleach, does not discolor fabrics. You can use it to wash particularly dirty garments, especially greasy ones, by diluting 5 tablespoons in 500 ml of detergent. It is of fundamental importance not to exceed this dosage in order not to damage your garments, which will be perfectly stain-free and sanitized at the end of the wash.

Even sweaters can obtain benefits from the use of ammonia: use a capful in the detergent dispenser on a 30-degree wash, without spinning or with a very low speed spin; your sweaters will be perfectly clean, stain-free and sanitized.

Lastly, ammonia is also excellent simply for cleaning and sanitizing the washing machine: put a glass of ammonia in the drum and do an empty wash: your washing machine will be perfectly cleaned and sanitized.
