One of the nicest things about summer is being able to wear light clothes and open shoes, like flip flops. And what's more wonderful than enjoying a day at the beach wearing your favorite pair of flip flops? However, it often happens that the insides of our flip flops get stained and blacken. These stains are caused by sweat, sand, salt and dust and are difficult to remove.

However, there is no need to rush out and buy new flip flops: in fact, there are many useful, natural remedies to clean dirty flip flops. Let's find out all the ways in which you can do this:

Amongst the natural remedies you can use to clean your flip flops, are the following:

  • Sodium bicarbonate (baking soda): this is certainly the first product we think of when we need to remove stains or whiten something. If we want to remove stains from our flip flops, baking soda is the perfect remedy thanks to its slightly abrasive action, which effectively removes any stubborn stain. Use it by creating a thick paste with a spoonful of bicarbonate and water added slowly, applying it to the flip flops and leaving it to act for 20-30 minutes before removing it by rubbing lightly with a non-abrasive sponge.
  • Marseille soap: this is another product well known for its degreasing and cleansing  properties, Marseille soap can be added to a basin of warm water in which to leave the flip flops to soak for 15 minutes; you can remove dirt and streaks by scrubbing with a sponge or brush.
  • Lemon juice: like bicarbonate, lemon juice is known for its whitening properties and you can apply it directly on the stained areas, leaving it to act for about 10 minutes. Then rub off with a damp microfiber cloth and let the flip flops air dry.
  • White vinegar: finally, one of the most versatile products for cleaning must be mentioned. Like Marseille soap, vinegar can be added to a basin of warm water, where you'll soak your flip-flops for 20 minutes before scrubbing them with a sponge or brush. Rinse thoroughly and leave to air dry.

And what if, in addition to the stains, your flip flops also smell bad? After cleaning them, you can sprinkle them with talcum powder, corn starch or fine salt, leaving these to act overnight; or rub vigorously with a microfiber cloth on which you have poured a few drops of an essential oil of your choice.

Your flip flops will be like new again!
