There is no bathroom that is completely immune to the risk of mold developing. And mold likes to form in difficult-to-reach spots, such as the joints between tiles and the silicone seals around the bathroom fixtures. Not only is having to look at blackened mold annoying, but it is potentially harmful to our health - even more so for those who suffer from respiratory problems. So, when we see mold, we need to act.

That said, mold can seem near-impossible to remove. Nothing could be further from the truth! You just need to use the right methods:

If you have been putting off this cleaning for a long time, you will need to use more aggressive cleaning products: bleach works well to remove mold. Bleach acts quickly and kills mold spores. However, bleach is also very aggressive, so only use it when other methods are not having the desired effect.

In particular, if, after using the bleach, you see that the silicone is ruined, you will need to replace it. And before re-siliconing, make sure you kill any remaining spores by cleaning the nearby walls and edges of the sanitary ware with bleach (or hydrogen peroxide).

Whenever you're doing this, remember to ventilate the room properly, use gloves and protect your respiratory tract with a mask.

To use the bleach, you can pour it directly onto the silicone or - to be sure that it stays in contact with the surface - take some old rags, soack them with bleach and leave them resting on the areas to be treated. After at least an hour, you can use an old toothbrush to scrub everything away; then rinse off thoroughly.

On the other hand, when the mold is relatively new, it is best to use hydrogen peroxide. Hydrogen peroxide can be used just like the bleach method, only that it needs to remain in contact for longer with the area to be treated. And you can enhance the cleaning results by mixing hydrogen peroxide with baking soda (to form a paste). You can also add a few drops of teatree essential oil to this paste (which has natural antifungal and antibacterial properties, as well as a fresh and pleasant smell).

What is your preferred mold-cleaning method?
