How often do we use white vinegar for cleaning chores at home? From scrubbing surfaces, to tackling mold or helping with tough laundry stains and more, vinegar is truly a cleaning "Jack of all trades". And so are lemons: from the juice to the peels and even squeezed wedges, lemons are a great home cleaning helper.

Furthermore, lemons and vinegar can also be used together and it is not uncommon to spot products with both ingredients on sale in supermarkets. But did you know you can easily make this blended product yourself?

Many people don't like the sour smell of vinegar: it is true that it fades after a while, but while it lasts, it can be really unpleasant (especially if we have had to use it in small, poorly ventilated rooms). With lemon, on the other hand, there are never any unpleasant smells! So, it's too bad then that when used alone, lemon juice is sometimes not as effective as white vinegar (or takes longer to obtain comparable results).

Fortunately, you can create the powerful combo of these two ingredients easily and cheaply. All you need is: a large glass jar with a lid, lemons and white vinegar. As for the lemons, you can use whole, fresh ones, but you could also use lemon scraps (as long as they are not off). Even a previously-squeezed lemon can be used. Just cut the used lemon into wedges or just use the peel. And, this way, you also avoid creating waste! But remember to only use the juice of the lemon and the yellow part of the rind (and avoiding the white pulp).

As for vinegar, it is advisable to use white wine vinegar or alcohol vinegar. However, if you are sure that your lemon vinegar mix will be used on floors, or materials and surfaces which will not stain, you can use apple or rice vinegar.

The preparation method is very simple: wash the lemons thoroughly before using them and dry them using absorbent paper. You will need four for every liter of vinegar. Squeeze the lemon juice into the jar and then remove and add the rinds with the help of a potato peeler. Meanwhile, heat the vinegar in a saucepan for a few minutes and before it comes to a boil, pour this into the jar too. Put the lid on the jar and keep it in a cool, dark and dry place for at least 24 hours (or up to 2 weeks), to make the lemony aroma stronger.

At the time of use, simply filter out the amount you need to do your cleaning chores!
