Sponges to the rescue: they can be used for much more than washing the dishes

How many times a day do we pick up a sponge to do some cleaning around the house? From washing a few dishes in the kitchen sink, to removing dirt from the fixtures in the bathroom, or simply to wipe down surfaces in general, sponges are essential household cleaning aides. And it is not unusual for us to have a few around at home.

We often throw sponges away too soon. Indeed, sponges would last longer if we simply cleaned and sanitized them properly. But when they lose their shape and start to disintegrate, their destiny is the trash can. But wait a moment - we can still use old sponges (or even new ones) for other purposes.

To transform any sponge (used or new) into a different type of cleaning tool, all you need is a marker and a box cutter.

If you have windows that slide open and closed on rails, using a sponge will help you clean these "hard-to-reach" fixtures (that frequently get clogged with dirt and debris). You can take the marker, place the sponge on a rail, and draw lines on it corresponding with the vertical "blades" of each rail. Then, using the box cutter, you can cut the sponge to this precise sharpe. In this way, you can insert the sponge fully inside the groves of the rail perfectly for a thorough cleaning.

Using this technique is not just limited to cleaning window frames and fixtures. Indeed, with larger sponges you can clean the railings for the sliding doors of your shower cubicle, for example!

And perhaps you want to clean out a vase (or a bottle) that you can't get your hand into: in this case you can also use an old sponge. Cut it to the right shape and size, secure it to a stick (perhaps by using magnets and metal parts), and you create a great, double-sided bottle brush!

Convenient, right?
