It is in the nature of dogs and cats to mark their territory by systematically urinating at strategic spots. And so, every other animal that routinely passes these spots is prompted to do the same. However, when these "strategic spots" are close to the home - giving off a pungent, unpleasant odor - we need to do something about this.

Fortunately, you can easily solve this problem by using some DIY methods

The most popular ingredient to use is white vinegar. It can be vinegar from wine, alcohol or apples. Just like in household cleaning, vinegar can neutralize bad smells, but in this specific case, it also has a further function: thanks to the acetic acid it contains, the smell is unpleasant for dogs and cats, which will avoid using the spot.

Depending on how often animals use the spot will determine how often you need to treat it. In any case, you can sprinkle a little neat vinegar directly on the area, and even have a mixture ready (in a bottle or in a spray bottle) made of water and vinegar in equal parts. Use it after rinsing away as much of the urine as possible, then wait for everything to dry a bit and pour this remedy on the surface.

Lemon juice can also be used in a similar way: squeeze a few lemons and pour the juice directly on the area, diluting it with water in a 50/50 ratio. You could also add 15-20 drops of essential oils per liter to this mixture. Perhaps choose mint or eucalyptus which, in addition to being pleasant, lingers longer. Further, you can add a tablespoon of baking soda to every liter of liquid used for this mixture. You will need to shake the mixture well before spraying or pouring it on the affected area.

If, on the other hand, you want to use commercial detergents, get enzymatic types, which are more effective at removing bad smells.
