Orchids are known to be plants that are relatively difficult to raise; in fact, they need the exact right lighting, watering and humidity conditions. And even if we are fastidious about observing their needs, orchids still frequently wither and die on us.
However, there are some tips we can follow to ensure our orchids thrive. And one of these tips involves the use of a simple plastic bottle.
Let's find what this is all about by reading on:
Preparing pots for your orchids using plastic bottles is quick and easy and will allow the plants to thrive. Just follow these steps:
- Get yourself a plastic bottle and a craft knife. After removing any labels, cut the bottle at the one-third mark, making sure to leave a small portion so the top third will remained attached to the bottom two-thirds (just like a lid);
- With a pointed metal object (like a nail), make holes in both parts of the bottle: these will serve as drainage holes;
- With a hot iron, soften the plastic of the upper part of the bottle;
- At this point, turn the upper part of the bottle upside down, place it inside the bottom part and insert some charcoal: you will need this to retain humidity and also to act as a fertilizer;
- Now is the time to place your orchid on the charcoal, supported by a wooden stick. Remember to water the orchid generously when the soil is dry, and hang the bottle from the ceiling (or similar).
