Keep ants away from your home with a simple DIY remedy
As soon as temperatures rise a bit, every home is at risk of being invaded by ants. And if you live in the countryside, the chances that ants will choose your home as a "home base" is much higher.
There are many industrial pesticides that can be used to solve this problem, but if you have children or pets in the home, it is more prudent to use eco-friendly, DIY remedies. It take a bit more effort to do this, but it's worth it!
One method is described below and you will need:
- 15 grams of borax (about a tablespoon)
- 250 grams of sugar
- 130ml of water
The preparation procedure is very simple, and for this, you will need: a saucepan, a wooden spoon, cotton balls and a glass jar. Follow these steps:
- Boil the water;
- Add the sugar and borax;
- Mix well, until the powders dissolve;
- Let the mix cool down a bit;
- Dip the cotton balls in the mix, soaking them (you can use pliers, and it is best to wear gloves);
- Place the cotton balls where ants enter the home and/or on their marching routes;
- If you have any left of the mixture left over, store it in a glass jar in a cool, dark place.
Sugar is used to attract the ants, while borax kills them. To make this trap more effective, however, also make sure you seal off the ants' entrances.
Furthermore, as a preventive measure, it is always best to make the house less "attractive" for ants: so, if you happen to spill sugar, flour or other foods in the kitchen, make sure you clean up properly. Food leftovers attract ants more than anything else.
