Fight back against the airlines: 10 tips for traveling with hand luggage only
Traveling has become, over time, easier, more comfortable and faster, thanks to the multiplication of routes and airlines. The travel options we have are vast. However, the costs of flights have also become more expensive.
Even low-cost airlines are charging more and offering less, because demand is very high and they can know they can screw us over. One of the ways they've done this is to charge for luggage. Now, the more you take, the more you pay - no more free check-in luggage. As yet, airlines are not charging for carry-on/hand luggage, but it's just a matter of time many believe...
In the meantime, and until this happens, here are a few tips to get the most from your "still free" hand luggage:
1. Find out about the permitted bag size
The first thing to do, is to find out about the permitted dimensions of your hand luggage bag and stick within these limits. Take a tape measure with you to the luggage shop to be sure.
2. Draw up a list of essential things to take
To avoid forgetting something or taking something not really needed, we advise you to draw up a list of what is really essential to you and then arrange everything neatly on the bed before packing your suitcase.
3. Prepare an outfit "kit" for every day travelling
A great way to save space is to prepare an outfit "kit" for every day you will be away and separate the various days into bags with the names of the days written on them.
3. Pack your clothes methodically
Having a method for packing things in an orderly and space-saving manner is essential. Usually, it is recommended to roll up the garments and arrange the rest of the luggage in the empty spaces. But we advise you to adjust this method according to the shape and size of your luggage. If the latter allows it, for example, you might think about stacking items vertically.
5. Bring a large, comfortable bag
In addition to the hand luggage, some airline companies offer the possibility of carrying on board a bag that can be slipped under the seat (another "privilege " that will undoubtably vanish in the near future). It is advisable to make the most of this opportunity (if available), by taking a bag which will fit under your seat. Check online for dimensions.
6. Buy a resealable K-Way
A foldable, packable K-Way jacket can be inserted into a small space and could save you from bad weather (and without taking up a large amout of space). K-Way is an American brand of waterproof jackets, packable and reversible.
7. Buy cleansers and cosmetics in mini format
Mini-sized, travel cosmetics are now available everywhere (despite some airlines lobbying against these products). They will allow you to get through security and will take up very little space in your suitcase.
8. Pay attention to the shoes you take
Shoes are amongst the most problematic objects to pack. Choose multi-purpose models to pack (ie. ones that can be used for multiple occasions), and make sure you wear your bulkiest shoes on the plane.
9. Pack a travel hair dryer and hair straightener
Buying a travel hairdryer and a travel-sized hair straightener are an expense that you should invest in if you want to get these items into your carry-on.
10. Find ways to wear your hat without taking up too much space
Finally, an indispensable accessory for any trip is a hat. If it is easily foldable, you will have no problem storing it in your luggage. Otherwise, you can use special hooks to attach it to your bag or backpack, instead of wasting precious space. Or just wear it...
