In its essence, a staircase is a functional architectural element that serves to connect two floors of a house. The first thing that must be ensured is that it is safe to use, and at the same time, pleasant to use and look at. This, at least, is what most of us consider when choosing a staircase design.

However, in the hands of some architects, the staircase becomes almost a work of art that commands attention. Below, you will find some examples of some extraordinary, wooden staircases.

A staircase like this will immediately make you feel you are in some ancient Central European building.

The splendor of this staircase is revealed in the large atrium it occupies and showing off its soft lines and unfurling wings leading upstairs.

With staircases like these, there's really very little to add to the decor... In fact, any decoration on the walls would be too much!

Here's a modern and classical blend: the combination of wood and wrought iron produces a stunning staircase.

And what if the wood - an incredibly versatile material - took on sinuous shapes make the staircase almost seem to be alive?

This "living wood" design is now trending online, and has produced some magnificent staircases, like this one.

Here's an unorthodox design: a modern staircase but having very humble shapes and lines defined by square cu-to-measure beams. This is a design idea from the QC studio in Poland.

Here's modern minimalism designed according to an "industrial Boho" taste, in a project by Melanie Jade Design.

Certain staircases, although imposing, can have an incredible lightness, as in the work of art entitled "Interstellar staircase", by Y.S. lam. ‏Straw Design (in the UK).

The spiral "movement" here becomes even more harmonious and serene thanks to the truly incredible shapes devised by an architect with great vision.

Have you ever considered that a wooden staircase could also be a wonderful sculpture? This is an idea from Yanko Design.

Dynamic, organic and iamazing: this is a staircase produced by the WAFAI design studio for a house on a Swiss lake. Right out of a dream, no?

Which of these staircases do you like the most?
