Useful tips to get clean and streak-free glass, all thanks to vinegar
Washing the windows is one of the most onerous chores we have to do at home. Dust, smog, pollution, dirt, pet paws and fingerprints are the main window-dirtying culprits. Not to mention the streaks that remain behind after we've cleaned the windows. And the causes of these streaks are not always clear. What is certain, is that they are a real pain.
Did you know that to permanently get rid of streaking on your windows, you just need a bottle of vinegar? Check out the procedure below:

Before starting, clear all the space around the window in order to work more easily. Place sheets of newspaper or plastic sheeting under the window to prevent the floor or furniture from getting wet/dirty. Then remove all the dust and dirt from the window frames as best you can. On PVC window frames, you can use a non-aggressive detergent or the same mixture of water and vinegar that you use for glasses. On wooden window frames, it is preferable to use a damp sponge moistened with water only.
At this point, you are ready to clean your windows: mix equal parts hot water and vinegar and add half a teaspoon of lemon essential oil or, alternatively, the juice of half a lemon. Pour this mixture into a spray container and spray onto the glass to be cleaned, rubbing with a cotton or microfiber cloth. The surface will be perfectly clean and streak-free afterwards.
If your windows are particularly dirty, prepare a more effective cleaner by mixing 3 parts vinegar with one part hot water and the juice of a whole lemon. Rub the glass with a wet sponge and dry off with a leather/chamois cleaning cloth.
Finally, remember these important precautions:
- do not clean the windows when there is full, direct sunlight on them: excessive heat could cause the cleaner to dry too quickly;
- avoid causing scratches by not using rough or abrasive sponges;
- use hot water for the cleaning: it has a greater degreasing power and mixes better with the vinegar.
