How many times has it happened to you that, while cleaning the house, you detect the smell of dust or damp? Perhaps, despite trying hard, you have been unable to locate the source of these unpleasant odors.
In some cases, the unpleasant smell is coming off the floor - but this is an easy problem to remedy. In this article, we reveal the secrets to keeping your floors clean and perfumed.

Let's start with a short analysis of the problem:
- Dust: are you sure you have removed all the dust from your floor before washing it?
- Detergent: if you use an excessive amount of detergent, not only can this cause smells, but you will also risk having to wash the floor again. In fact, excess detergent forms a greasy film on the floor, dulling it and causing bad odours.
- Humidity: likewise, if the mop is not wrung out properly, streaks of water will remain on the floor, which will make it look dirty and will inevitably cause bad smells.
- Mop: cleaning tools also need to be cleaned. A dirty mop, rags and/or bucket are the major causes of bad smells.
So, how best to clean the floors?
- Wash out the rags, mop and bucket carefully after each session, sanitizing them with bleach or, better still, with bicarbonate and vinegar or citric acid.
- Do not use a rag or mop that is still damp: after washing, hang them out to dry like any other laundry and use them only when completely dry.
- Use only clean water: it seems like obvious advice, but we often forget to do this. Making sure the water is clean ensures not only greater hygiene, but also a higher probability that your home will smell good.
- Detergents: if you want to make sure you cleanse and sanitize your floor properly, use a good-quality detergent and above all, in the correct doses. You can also choose natural alternatives, such as vinegar and bicarbonate, which sanitize and, with the addition of essential oils, will release a pleasant scent. Just be careful of your type of floor: these remedies are not suitable for all sufaces!
- Get some help from essential oils too: added these oils to the washing water will release a pleasant aroma for a long time. However, do not mix them with other detergents, adding them only to clean water or to a mixture of water and vinegar or baking soda.
