Keeping pigeons away from your washing line by using strong spices
Undisputed rulers of the city streets and squares, pigeons are now part of the urban landscape and unavoidable subjects in the photos of tourists all over the world. However, in addition to being "travel companions", pigeons are also responsible for the widespread dirt deposited on city buildings and monuments. And they are carriers of germs and parasites that are potentially harmful to humans.
Perfectly adapted to life alongside humans, pigeons have no qualms about approaching customers at open-air bars and restaurants or looking for food and shelter on the terraces and balconies of our home - sometimes forcing us to clean up after them. Not to mention the frustration when we hang the laundry out and later find it covered in pigeon excrement.
There are some very effective methods to dissuade pigeons from approaching our laundry and they are also very simple to put into practice: just look inside your pantry! Read on to find out more:

We all know how easy it is to scare pigeons using lights and loud noises so, this can work to our advantage:
- Simple strips of aluminum foil hanging from your railings (or the washing line iteself) will reflect the sunlight, frightening pigeons away;
- Do you have any old CDs or DVDs at home that you no longer use? Hang them up on your balcony. They will do the same job as the aluminum foil;
- If you prefer to opt for using noise, you can put us some plastic or paper plate wind chimes: making a noise when they are moved by the breeze, they will instantly drive away pigeons.
If these methods do not suit you, there are also different repelling remedies using strong and pungent smells:
- Place spice bags on the balcony, in vases or hanging on the railings near the laundry or directly on the washing line itself; use pepper, chilli powder and cinnamon. These pungent smells will dissuade pigeons from wandering around your washing line. In this case, replace the bags after it rains, because they will lose their effectiveness.
- Camphor also acts in the same way. Already widely used as an anti-moth remedy, camphor also repels pigeons. Replace it often to ensure its continued effectiveness.
