Saving money is becoming increasingly necessary and indispensable. From expenses for water to our power bills, saving on these bills is a constant concern that we all try various strategies to achieve.

In this article, we focus on making savings on probably the prime consumer of power and water in the home - the washing machine. Check out some of the suggestions made below:

  • Program and temperature: savings on washing machine costs start from the choice of programs and washing cycles used. As far as the latest generation washing machines are concerned, it is advisable to choose the so-called eco wash cycles (which most modern machines have). In general, it is always a good idea to start washing at low temperatures - unless the laundry is very dirty - because there is a considerable saving in both water and electricity. Recent surveys have established that washing at 30°C is the best in terms of effectiveness, duration and the consequent consumption of electricity and water.
  • Energy class: another factor to evaluate concerns the decision to buy a high-energy class washing machine (usually class A or A+). This is, of course, something to take into consideration when buying a washing maching and, as you know, you don't buy a new washing machine every day. However, it is a choice that can make a significant difference.
  • Time slots: a strategy that not everyone adopts but which can allow significant savings is to do the laundry during certain time slots that are cheaper. These cheaper time slots are usually the evening and during the night, from Monday to Friday. During the weekend and holidays, on the other hand, almost all time slots are cheaper.
  • The load: it seems obvious to say this, but using the washing machine with a full load is certainly a good habit. Of course, you need to be careful not to overload it (which will reduce the efficacy of the wash).
  • Maintenance: last but not least, a decisive factor for the proper functioning of the washing machine (and saving on repairs) is maintenance. Taking care to periodically clean the machine - especially with regard to limescale build-up - can prevent the machine from malfunctioning.
