When the weather allows it, it is always preferable to dry the laundry outdoors: it does not cause humidity in the house, it dries faster, and if it is in sunlight, the risk of mold forming on the fabrics is also avoided. But in the city, leaving clothes to hang out in the open can involve a risk that shouldn't be underestimated: that they end up getting dirty due to pigeons excreting on them.

There are several ways to keep these birds away, which sometimes nest so close to the balcony that they are present all day and night, making noise and dirtying the balconies. Without resorting to aggressive methods, you can try a different solution. One of these involves the use of cinnamon powder.

Pigeons do not like very strong smells, and that of cinnamon is particularly pungent and persistent: it ends up irritating the nasal cavities of the pigeons, which then will move on to avoid this.

How best to use cinnamon for this? There are various ways:

  • You can sprinkle the cinnamon powder on the areas where pigeons perch frequently, or where they nest.
  • Some spread the powder directly on the clothesline, or on the clothes which are hanging up. But be sure you shake the powder off before bringing the clothes back into the house.
  • A spray: In a spray bottle, mix two parts water and one part white vinegar; add a spoonful of cinnamon powder and shake well. Spray the mix generously in all the places where pigeons frequent.

In addition to cinnamon, pepper or chili powder can be used in a similar way. Even mothballs in flakes or balls (the ones you use in wardrobes) are also effective.

These are natural remedies, which are quite effective if the situation is not out of hand. However, they have a limitation in that they must be administered regularly: the smell doesn't linger forever, and rain and wind can reduce the repellant effect. However, the ingredients are inexpensive, eco-friendly and non-aggressive. It's worth a try, don't you think?
