You just need a bar of Marseille soap to clean your entire home

The idea of washing the laundry with a solid bar of soap seem antiquated these days. But sometimes, even these days, a bar of soap can come in handy.

So, every home should have some Marseille soap bars laying around: while it does come in liquid form, the traditional type is solid. And if you are lucky enough to be able to find Marseille soap made only of natural ingredients, it's even better! It's versatility makes this a product well worth having at home - as you will see below:

In the bathroom:

  • Sanitaryware/porcelain: cut the soap into thin flakes, wet a microfibre cloth with hot water, wring out, place the flakes inside (which will melt quickly with the heat), and pass over the porcelain.
If, on the other hand, you use a sponge, you will have to wet a corner of the soap with warm water and then rub it vigorously on the sponge itself, until it is filled with soap. At this point you can use the sponge normally.
Obviously, this also works for cleaning the surfaces too - in marble, quartz, melamine and more. Be careful not to use too much water on wood surfaces.
  • Taps: you can use of the method above, or even dissolve a few flakes in hot water and vinegar. Then use this mixture to make the taps shine again and clean off any limescale.
  • Grouting and mold: dissolve the soap in a little hot water (you won't need much to get the consistency of a regular liquid detergent), then add hydrogen peroxide and baking soda until you get a smooth paste. Rub on with an old toothbrush, leave for at least half an hour, and then rinse off.

The kitchen:

  • Shelves and the sink: the tips indicated for bathroom fixtures and faucets above are also valid here.
  • Dishes and cutlery: this soap is a great substitute for any dishwashing liquid!
  • Fridge and freezer: if the time has come to wash the floors, prepare a spray product by diluting a handful of flakes of Marseille soap in hot water, mix and pour into a bottle. If you like, you can add 3 or 5 drops of lemon or peppermint essential oil. Again, you could also add a spoonful of baking soda.

Floors:

Again, you will need to dissovle the soap in a bucket of very hot water. Then you will use this like a regular detergent. You could also add some mild bleach (a half cup or so).

If the floors are wooden, Marseille soap is still a good choice - just  avoid using large quantities of water. Wring the mop properly and do not use an excessive amount of soap.

Glass and mirrors:

For very dirty glass or mirrors, and where a mixture of water and vinegar, or alcohol is not enough, you can add a spoonful of flakes of Marseille soap to the mix.

In short, a bar of Marseille soap will alway be your best friend when you're cleaning your home!
