In the vast majority of cases, furniture - especially wall units and shelves - found in the kitchen are made of wood. It is an extremely beautiful, versatile material. However, wood also has a small disadvantage: it easily soaks up strong smells that come from the stove. Additionally, wood can also get covered in a fine film of grease and oil which comes from cooking.

So, especially for the units located near the stove, it is advisable to periodically carry out a thorough cleaning, which in addition to degreasing them, will also leave a pleasant scent in the air.

  • White vinegar: this is the first solution we all think of, but be careful! It can be used, sparingly and not too often, on wood that is not lacquered (otherwise you risk damaging it). Dilute a glass of vinegar in half a liter of warm water, add 5 drops of an essential oil of your choice (perhaps citrus oil), mix togehter and spray the surfaces using a spray bottle and a soft cloth to wipe down. If necessary, use a second soft damp cloth to wipe dry. Usually wine vinegar or alcohol vinegar is recommended, but in this case, apple vinegar has a more pleasant scent.
  • Marseille soap: fill a basin with hot water and pour in a couple of tablespoons of Marseille soap, mix well and dip a microfibre cloth or soft sponge into the water (wringing out well. Then proceed to wipe down the kitchen units.
  • Lemon juice: instead of vinegar, you can also use a glass of lemon juice. Alternatively, dissolve a large spoonful of citric acid in water to make a DIY degreaser.
  • If the units are not very dirty, but you just want to eliminate the bad smell, pour two full tablespoons of baking soda and 10 drops of essential oil into the basin of hot water, perhaps preferring tea tree, mint, lavender or citrus.
