Sheets, towels and kitchen towels: can they be washed together?
Doing laundry is a fundamental household chore: not only because it allows us to wear clean and perfumed clothes, but also because washing kills off harmful bacteria. In addition to dividing up the washing by color - to prevent "unpleasant" mishaps - many also recommend washing the towels separately too.
But is this precaution really necessary? Or is it possible to wash towels together with tea towels and other kitchen linen together without risk? Mattia explains that it is in a video on his YouTube channel.

It is good practice to separate towels, sheets and kitchen towels from all other items for hygienic reasons: in fact, with use, mold and bacteria can accumulate on these fabrics which, in a mixed load, could also spread to clothing. But is it really necessary to separate even towels from tea towels (and other similar kitchen linen)?
The answer is no - if you take the necessary precautions. It is in fact possible to have get perfectly sanitized and clean laundry even by mixing these two by paying attention to the washing temperatures and the cleaning products used. Here's how:
- Pretreat the most stubborn stains by soaking the items in hot water and baking soda; you can also leave them in the mixture for half a day before transferring them to the washing machine.
- The washing temperature must never be lower than 60 degrees C; if the fabrics are white or not subject to fading or running, it is best to wash them at 90 degrees C.
- Do not load the washing machine to more than 80% of its capacity, especially if the items are heavily soiled.
- Use a powder detergent which is more effective at high temperatures, because these contains active oxygen, which will sanitize the fabrics during washing.
- For heavily soiled laundry, add another oxygenating agent, such as an active oxygen stain remover or a mild bleach.
With these tips, you will no longer need to separate towels from your tea towels in the wash! Watch the video on the YouTube channel, @La casa di Mattia, for a more detailed explanation!
