Counter-islands for the kitchen: 11 great ideas for making one using pallets
In the kitchen, it's always handy to have a lot of space available. So, wherever possible, installing an island that offers extra space for storing objects, preparing dishes or doing other tasks, can be an invaluable resource. Unfortunately, large and fully equipped islands are only feasible in larger kitchens. For smaller kitchens, what can be done? Well, you don't have to give up: you can install island counters and stools (often stored underneath the counters when not needed), and which act as extra work surfaces.
And these island counters can also be made from pallets. Below you will find ideas to consider:
A really narrow counter that is placed against a side wall. This also serves to separate the kitchen space.
Another idea for a really small space: this counter is very narrow - just a space to eat at, without having to move everything onto a table in another room.
A model with a wider top, painted to contrast with the framework underneath. The special feature is not only that is there space for shelves underneath, but you can also hide the stools away when you don't need them.
The simplest project is one that places two pallets facing each other, joined at the top by a wooden board, and far apart enough just enough to insert another board inside, which will function as a handy shelf.
But if you decide to turn at least one of the pallets to the outside face, you can get storage compartments for all your goodies.
Generally, a finished piece of wood is used for the tops - perhaps laminated too. Or even treated with melamine.
Another combination to consider is a sheet of glass to serve as the counter-top.
Being reclaimed wood, the pallets you use will have to be well treated and sanded, and then you can paint them whatever color you want.
With a little carpentry skill, they are some really simple projects you can do!
And nothing prevents you from expanding your project to make a more substantial piece of furniture.
You might like this idea so much that you want to build an outside bar too!
