Simple tips to prevent the yellowing of white sofas and armchairs
How beautiful white sofas and armchairs are! They are white furnishing accessories suitable for any style, which always add a touch of class and elegance, and also make a room look more spacious and bright. The worst bit about using white is that it gets dirty easily: much more attention is needed for white furniture than black or dark-colored objects. Another frequent problem is that of yellowing: although they can be clean, white fabrics still tend to get yellow over time, losing their beauty and giving the entire environment a shabby feel.
So how can we prevent this yellowing or remedy it? There are several natural methods that can help us in this regard which are different according to the fabric to be treated.
Leather couches
For your leather sofa, the following can be done:
- Talcum powder: sprinkle the entire surface of the sofa with talcum powder and leave to act for an hour before removing it with a soft cloth.
- Marseille soap: you can dissolve this soap in water or rub it gently on the surface; rinse off with a well-wrung out cloth and allow to dry.
- Glycerin: another very effective remedy for skin, you can use glycerin by wetting a cotton ball in it and gently passing it over the sofa. Remove any residue with a soft cloth.
- Cleansing milk: an unusual but very effective remedy; rub it on the sofa gently with a soft cloth, then rinse off with a damp cloth and allow to dry.
With these simple tips, your leather sofa will regain its original whiteness.
Sofas in fabric
If, on the other hand, you have a fabric sofa, we recommend the following remedies:
- Hydrogen peroxide: pour a glass of this into a liter of water and use the mixture to rub down the whole sofa, leaving it to air dry.
- Lemons: mix the juice of some lemons in a basin of water and apply with a brush directly to the yellowed spots. Rinse off with clean water and let it dry.
- Baking soda: in addition to being a whitener, baking soda is also an excellent sanitizer. All you need to do is sprinkle the surface of your sofa with baking soda and leave it to act for a few hours; then remove it with a vacuum cleaner. In the same way, baking powder can also be used to get excellent results.
- White vinegar: prepare a mixture of 500 ml of white vinegar, 200 ml of warm water and a drop of detergent; spray this mixture on a sponge and wipe over all the yellow stains; then rinse off with a damp cloth and leave to dry.
