Sanitize dish sponges in the microwave: it only takes 3 minutes
Sometimes we don't have time to stack and run the dishwasher and we need something that is still dirty inside it. In other cases, perhaps there is no dishwasher at home (or it's broken): whatever the reason, it is quite probable that we all have had to hand-wash some items we need using a dish sponge.
We all know that, after each use, dish sponges should be washed themselves with a little soap and rinsed off thoroughly. But does this really get them clean? Even a good wash can leave germs and bacteria on a sponge. So how can we sanitize them properly, and make them last even longer? Well, we can use the microwave.
This tip is no longer so secret, but if you don't know about it yet, it's worth a try. You can also see how simple it is in the video posted to Instagram by user, cleantoxmexico.
What is needed:
- A microwave-safe bowl
- White vinegar (alcohol or wine vinegar, it doesn't matter)
And that's all you need! Here's how to sanitize your dish sponges in just a few minutes:
- Pour the white vinegar into the bowl, just enough to wet the sponge;
- Dip the sponge in the vinegar (perhaps having already washed it with soap): it must be soaked in vinegar;
- Put the wet sponge in the microwave and activate the cooking program at medium power setting for 3 minutes;
- When it's finished, be careful not to burn yourself: wait a bit before taking the sponge out of the microwave.

In a matter of seconds, you will have sanitized the sponge, ready for use again. Doing this once, or even twice a week is a way to make sponges last longer, with a significant reduction in waste.
Do you remember to sanitize your dish sponges frequency?
