DIY candles in wooden bowls: a winning idea to be tried
There really are a thousand ways to decorate the home using candles, especially if you undertake DIY projects. One popular project is creating candles by hand, using wooden bowls as the candle holders. These bowls are called Dough Bowls because they are made by modelling wood pulp (the pulp looks like bread dough, hence the name). However, this does not mean that trays, bowls and other similar objects carved from wood in the traditional way, cannot be used for this purpose.
Once a bowl is filled with wax and a few wicks, you have a unique and very fascinating piece to use as a centerpiece or perhaps to decorate the coffee table in the living room. Let's see how to make these candle bowls:
Wood pulp bowls are the most popular used for this project: they can also be found online, and can have many different shapes. However, if you want to use any other type of wooden, bowl-shaped object, that will be just fine. And you can go as far as to use a hand-crafted piece of wood.
To help keep the wicks in place when the liquid wax is poured, use wooden sticks (skewers, for example) tied together to pinch the wick, resting along the edges of the bowl. Use as many wicks as you want, and remember that several are needed to creat the proper effect.
Normally, the wax is filled to the brim. Then, to enhance the presentation, you can surround the bowls with twigs and leaves, or palce a tall vase of branches and leaves (even artificial ones) to one side.
As with regular candles, you can also perfume the wax by adding dried spices – lavender flowers are always a great choice.
Twigs from a fir or a conifer, together with dried orange slices: perfect for the winter.
And what if you want a beach atmosphere? Shells and sand can make a beautiful decoration.
And even succulent plants - artificial ones, also made from wax - could be a lovely decoration in your home.
