Dirty sink drain: find out how to clean it easily and effectively

The kitchen sink comes into contact every day with many different types of dirt, grime and grease. But even after cleaning the sink, sometimes the dirt adheres to the walls of the pipes, or creates build-ups which then form blockages and give off bad smells.

Most modern sinks have a filter in the drain that can be easily disassembled to allow you to clean the unit a little more easily. This is chore that should be done regularly, and some guidance is provided below.

We can see how this is done in a video on the  account on Instagram.

The first thing to remove is the drain cover: in doing so, you will notice that there is a bolt in the center of the cover. If you have a suitable screwdriver at hand, you can unscrew this bolt easily, Failing that, any flat-edged tool should work. Check out the video of this process here.

At this point, it should be easy to disassemble the rest of the drain cover and it will probably be covered by a slightly muddy, brownish layer of dirt. Equip yourself with gloves (if you haven't already done so) and a degreaser suitable for cleaning metal. With the help of an old toothbrush, scrub the disassembled parts and the fixed areas of drain that you can reach. This is a job that should be done at least a couple of times a month, but which guarantees excellent hygiene and prevents blockages.

And if you don't have a proper cleaner to hand, you can make one using a paste of bicarbonate and water, leaving it to act for a few minutes before rinsing away. And you could add two or three drops of an essential oil of your choice to the paste. This will give off a pleasant scent and also counter fungus and bacteria build-up (a property of tea tree oil, for example).
