In every home there may be areas more subject to the problem of humidity than others. And if there are wardrobes, closets or chests of drawers full of clothes in these areas, both the furniture and the garments inside them can be impacted. In fact, not only does an unpleasant smell develop in the enclosed spaces inside the wardrobe, but so can mold. And mold can destroy both garments and furniture.

However, when the situation is not extremely serious, it is worthwhile to help yourself using simple remedies, such as an economic and completely natural one that we describe below:

All you need is:

  • A bag made of breathable fabric, such as cotton or gauze (alternatively, a handkerchief with an elastic band will do);
  • Uncooked rice;
  • An essential oil you like (optional).

How to proceed:

  • Fill the bag with rice.
  • Add 4 or 5 drops of the essential oil. Tea tree is always recommended to combat mold, but lavender or citrus fruit oils are also excellent. And if by chance you also want to keep moths away, then you can try cedar essential oil.
  • Close the bag and check its condition every few weeks, possibly replacing it with a new one.

If you use a cloth bag, when you want to replace it with a new one, it is always advisable to wash it at high temperatures. In the case of paper bags, simply replace them and throw the old one away. The hygroscopic capacity of rice is excellent for absorbing the humidity present in wardrobes, and its very low cost makes it an idea remedy.

As an alternative to rice, you can use rock salt, bicarbonate of soda or even dried aromatic herbs - always taking care to check their condition periodically.

What are your favorite ways to keep damp out of your closets?
