A clean, functioning oven extractor hood is essential in a kitchen. It is an accessory created specifically to expel all the fumes and odors that are inevitably given off while cooking.

Especially when frying, preventing smells from spreading throughout the home is the hood's primary job. For this to happen, however, the hood must always be kept clean and grease-free. If this is not done, not only will the performance of the hood suffer, but so too can the hygiene conditions in the kitchen.

If you don't want to resort to using chemical cleaning products to clean the hood, some very useful natural remedies can be used instead. Read on to find out more:

Assuming that the outside of the hood should be cleaned every time you cook and the inside is cleaned once a week, some methods and natural products can help you with these tasks:

  • Citric acid: just one teaspoon dissolved in cold water is enough to make a degreasing solution which can be applied using a clean cloth.
  • White vinegar: vinegar is another great ally for cleaning the hood. Pour a few tablespoons into hot water and use the solution as a degreaser. Use a clean cloth or sponge and then rinse off. Alternatively, you can boil a saucepan of water and vinegar and let the vapour drift upwards to the hood. In this way, it will be much easier for you to clean both the external and internal parts of the hood.
  • Marseille soap: dissolve flakes of Marseille soap in hot water and immerse a cleaning cloth into it. Pass it over the hood's surfaces and then rinse off. In addition to the effectiveness and cleaning power of this remedy, the smell will be pleasant.
  • Yellow soap: this product can be used directly on a sponge or cloth, or it can be dissolved in water to make a liquid cleaning solution. Clean the surfaces and rinse off with cold water.
