Everyone has had the experience of finding themselves with a toilet which, after several years, is marred by dark stains or by yellowish spots of limescale deposits. Sometimes, this happens even when you are careful to use all the right preventative products. The hardness of the water, as well as the continuous use of certain detergents or toilet deodorizers, inevitably leads one to have to do a very thorough cleaning, the kind that erases the signs of ageing and use.

When you have to do this type of cleaning, you need to resort to using "elbow grease", but this does not automatically mean also using aggressive chemical agents. In fact, you can rely on naturally abrasive tools that are delicate enough not to damage the porcelain. One of this is a pumice stone.

This is an old tip, but not everyone knows about it. Showing how it is done, is TikTokker @nowitsclean.

The woman uses a pumice stone - a very porous and light stone of volcanic origin. Pumice stones come in many shapes and is often used to smooth calluses on the feet. But a pumice stone can also be used to do a number of household chores. Sometimes, one can find a pumice stone mounted on a useful wooden handle.

The secret to using the stone without damaging the porcelain is simple: you need to wet it before starting to rub it on the stained areas. In this way, it becomes a little softer and does not scratch the glazed surface of the porcelain.

As you can see in the video, first wet the stone, then rub it on the stains like an eraser. Thereafter, you can continue the cleaning using your favorite detergent (even natural, homemade ones), scrubbing the suface with a toilet brush. Once flushed, the toilet should be as good as new.

Be careful, however: the pumice stone should not be used very often, as it is abrasive. It is best to resort to using it only occassionally.
