Is your kitchen small? Save space with these 10 ingenious tips
The kitchen is the room in the house where we spend most of our time: cooking and having meals, but often also for all other activities, such as studying, working, children's homework, receiving guests, having a coffee, some treats, an aperitif or a dinner. This is why it is important that the kitchen is not only beautiful, but also functional, practical and welcoming.
So what can we do when we have a small kitchen with no room to swing a cat? Don't worry - there is no need to knock down the walls or even move to a new house. A few simple tips are enough and any kitchen can easily become a warm and welcoming place - and tailor-made for us.
1. Make use of all the walls
If the kitchen is small, a tip to save space is to use all the walls available to put up shelves: you can install shelves to store your dry goods or fruit baskets.
2. Tall, narrow shelves in the empty spaces
What about taking advantage of the space between the refrigerator and the wall, or between two pieces of furniture? You can also make a vertical shelving unit very simply by reusing old drawers: just turn them vertically, install wheels on the bottom and shelves inside the drawer. Now, you have extra space to place your utensils in or to store your food!
3. Hooks on the doors
Lids, small containers or other utensils take up a lot of space in our cabinets, even though they are often very small in size. By installing simple hooks inside the doors of your kitchen units, you can create some space to hang them, leaving room for all the bulkier items on the internal shelves!
4. Under the sink
Even the space under the sink is often not used properly in our kitchens: to optimize it's use, you can use products that create shelves or small drawers in this area: everything will immediately seem tidier and you will also have the opportunity to exploit this space vertically.
5. Under-cabinet hooks
How about storing cups, mugs and ladles using practical under-cabinet hooks? It will allow you to keep the space available on the shelf for other, bigger items.
6. Rails
Another ingenious space-saving idea is the installation of hanging rails: they can be mounted on any wall, or between wall units and can be used in conjunction with simple hooks or with baskets, dish drainers and vases. You can hang up anything!
7. Wall-mounted paper roll holder
For your rolls of absorbent paper, aluminum foil, film and parchment paper, you can use a practical roll holder. There are many types on the market - even those hung under the wall units (or you can make one yourself with fabric). They will also be a wonderful decorating idea!
8. Wall jars
If you love to cook and have many jars of spices and condiments laying around, you can save space by storing them on a wall or directly: get jars with a magnet lid or, if you are not so inclinded, you can buy some. You can place them on a metal plate attached to a wall or on the door of your refrigerator.
9. Magnetic tracks
Is there a better way to store knives and metal objects than on a magnetic track secured to the wall?
10. Ceiling-mounted pan holder
What if we told you to hang your pots and pans from the ceiling? They would certainly always be close at hand, although you may not like the idea of always having them exposed to air and dust.
These were just some of the space-saving ideas that you can adopt in your kitchens, but each space is unique and has its own solution. You just need to look around yours and think creatively: you will soon find a solution that's right for you!
