Remember when you came home from school as children with a bean growing in damp cotton? The emotion of seeing those little seeds slowly sprouting, is something unique that we never forget. We never think about it when we eat them, but just like legumes, there are many fruits whose seeds we can use to grow new plants - even if, on average, it will take between 7 to 10 years for them to bear fruit. If you are in a hurry to eat the fruit of your crops, the advice is to choose plants that are already budding. If, on the other hand, you want to delight in the growth of a new plant starting from the seed - perhaps with the help of your children - remember that dried fruit can also be an excellent choice.

Did you know that a walnut plant can be obtained from a nut stored in the refrigerator? Yes, you read that right - in the refrigerator! Let's find out how to do it together:

Growing a new plant from walnuts is a very simple process with few steps, albeit quite long. To do this, get some untreated, unroasted and unheated whole walnuts. It is important that the seeds are natural, otherwise you risk not being able to grow any sprouts. Select 10-15 nuts; only 50% will germinate and of these, only a few will become plants.

Prepare the walnuts by opening them only at the top; you can do this with pliers.

When you have opened all the nuts, soak them in water for about 48-72 hours to rehydrate them. After this time, you can drain them and move on to the next step. There are two options here: the first is to place the walnuts in a plastic bag with damp sand.

The second option, explained by @brian in his video tutorial on TikTok, is to wrap the nuts in absorbent paper and place them in an airtight plastic container after moistening them. In both options, the containers should be left in the refrigerator for about 12-15 weeks, after which the walnuts will have sprouted.

Remove the container from the fridge and place it in bright sunlight. In spring, when the seedlings have reached 15 cm in height, you can transplant them to a pot or the open ground. Now you just have to wait about 7 years to get your first harvest!
