Natural, homemade, scented candles: find out here how to make them
Scented candles have always been the best way to give your home a wonderful fragrance and magical atmosphere and to help you relax.
The candles that are on the market, however, are all made of wax containing chemical ingredients, such as paraffin - not exactly ecologically friendly and not completely healthy or suitable for one's well-being. So why not find natural alternatives that allow us to enjoy candles in total serenity?
It is possible to do this at home, with simple ingredients and methods that are within everyone's reach.
One of the possible alternatives is to use an ingredient that was used in ancient times to make candles. We're talking about lard and we want to briefly show you how to use it. You only need a few things:
- Lard
- Glass jars
- Ready-made wicks for candles
- Wax crayons of different colors
- Essential oils in different fragrances
The process is also really simple:
- Melt the lard in a saucepan over low heat and, separately, melt the crayons. Choose one color for each candle you want to make and put each of them in a different saucepan.
- For each candle, mix together the melted lard, the melted crayon and a few drops of essential oil.
- Pour the mixture into a glass jar and place the wick in the center, using a wooden peg on the edge to hold it in place until the candle has solidified.
- Put it in the fridge and let it solidify fully. In a few hours, you will have your colorful and fragrant candles.
A second option, even more natural and eco-friendly than the first, involves the use of soy wax. In this case, the ingredients are also easy to find:
- Soy wax
- Citrus peels (lemons, oranges or tangerines)
- Egg shells
- Plastic or glass bottles or jars
- Natural cotton threads
- Perfumed essential oils
- Natural coloring powders (cinnamon, turmeric, cocoa, coffee, etc.)
To produce the candles, just follow these very quick steps:
- Cut the citrus fruits in half, extracting the pulp from each half and making impromptu containers.
- Separate the contents from the egg shells, obtaining more, natural containers.
- Cut the plastic bottles in half, using the bottom as an additional jar.
- Melt the soy wax and dip the cotton threads into a part of it, letting them dry until they become stiff.
- Divide the remaining wax into as many parts as there are candles you need to create. In each portion of wax, add a powder of your choice to color and the essential oil of your choice.
- Place the wicks in the containers that you have previously created, taking care to fix them to the base with a few drops of wax that will solidify instantly and, in the middle, with a wooden peg that you will place on the edge of your container.
- Pour the various compounds into the containers and let them solidify.
- Once the wax has hardened, you can leave the candles inside their containers, or you can remove them to get a wonderfully moulded candle.
At this point, you can light your candles and enjoy their natural fragrences.
