Stop the chaos in your closets: follow a few tips to organize them efficiently
You are about to rush out in a hurry and are desperately looking for the right shirt for the occasion. You have to pack your bags, but you haven't sorted out your closet and what you need is buried under a mountain of other garments. These are just two examples of what happens when we neglect sorting out our cupboards: wardrobes, shelves and drawers that store our clothes and accessories seem to spontaneously descend into chaos.
Even folded garments can soon become a shapeless, jumbled pile in a cupboard. Given this, it is best to act in advance and reorganize everything, so as to eliminate any hassles in the future.
First, you need to understand what you are dealing with, so clear the bed, tables or even the floor (cover it with a clean sheet), then empty cupboards and drawers completely.
At this point, a double phase begins:
- Furniture cleaning: which you can do using specific products - perhaps even with DIY remedies, depending on the material. Vinegar, Marseille soap and baking soda will be your trusted allies for this.
- Sorting of garments: try on everything, check for things to repair (including shoes and bags), and decide what to keep and what to throw away.
Now comes the time to focus and plan. Equip yourself with pen and paper (or anything you need to make notes).
Start by dividing the garments by season, or perhaps according to other categories such as color, model, occasions for use and so on. When you have found the categories that suit you, check each group of clothes or accessories in each category to consider the space available in the cupboards.
- If the cupboard is large enough to hold everything, think about how to use the available space optimally. On the shelves, you can use vertical dividers, or add dividers inserted under each shelf; you can use closed boxes or baskets (of any material - even transparent ones with labels) to avoid creating mountains of accessories on each level. Then there are object holders to hang on the clothes rail, the hangers coming together in compact clusters. The solutions are numerous and can suit every need. There are also dividers that can be inserted into drawers to divide them into compartments (for underwear or fashion accessories for example).
- If, on the other hand, you are forced to make a seasonal change of clothes, equip yourself with plastic or cardboard boxes to store everything elsewhere in the house. Also take advantage of vacuum-packing bags (with the help of the vacuum cleaner). There are others storage bags where you can roll up the clothes, simultaneously letting the air out (without having to use a vacuum cleaner), before closing them.
Bags and leather goods deserve to be stored properly and without being piled up in a heap: just as for clothes, there are cases and boxes you can use for these too. Even pillowcases can help protect them against dust.
Shoes: keeping them in their original boxes takes up a lot of space. It is best to put them in special shoe racks, which you can hang up.
After finding space for everything, you can add deodorizers: sachets of aromatic herbs, soap flakes, bowls of bicarbonate - with or without essential oils - and so on, can be used. This is also the time to think about combatting moths: they do not like the smells of certain spices or herbs (lavender, mint, tea tree, thyme, eucalyptus and laurel in particular), nor of cedar wood (which is sold in small balls to be placed inside the furniture).
Carefully analyse the space you have, and with the help of thousands of online suggestions (including on our site), you will certainly find the perfect solution.
