Sleeping is essential for our health, and the quality of sleep greatly affects the way we perform during the day, and how our body and mind will react to challenges. So, it is good advice to take care of the place where we sleep: the bed.

In addition to the mattress which should be cleaned regularly or the sheets that need changing weekly, we must never neglect the pillows on which we rest our heads at night. Throughout the year, they absorb sweat, saliva, dead skin and environmental dirt, and even makeup or beauty products on our faces. We all know that washing a pillowcase is not enough, so how do we take care of the pillows themselves? Read on to find out more:

To remove stains:

Depending on the type of pillow, the manufacturers labels will indicate whether or not it can be machine washed. If so, you can prepare a product made with:

  • 200ml active oxygen whitener (nothing that has bleach)
  • 200 ml of dishwasher soap
  • 150 ml of Marseille soap
  • 80 grams of baking soda
  • water to obtain the viscousity of a regular detergent

Use this product on a gentle wash cycle (some washing machines have one specifically for pillows).

Alternatively, you can pour mix together 250 ml of boiling water, 1 tablespoon of baking soda, the juice of one lemon, 50 ml of hydrogen peroxide. When mixed and cooled off, you can use this product in the washing machine and for hand washing.

To deodorize and sanitize:

Mix water and white vinegar (or a pure alcohol, such as unflavoured vodka) in equal parts in a spray bottle; spray on the pillow and let it dry. Then, if you also want to a pleasant scent when you sleep, use a maximum of 5 drops of an essential oil such as lavender in the mix: lavender will help you sleep better.

For regular cleaning, when you  clean the mattress with baking soda, you can do the same with the pillows too: sprinkle the baking soda on them, let it act for half an hour (or more) and then vacuum up.
