After all, when the floor and the walls are clean, who cares about the skirting boards? And how dirty can they get? But skirting boards can get really dirty.
Dust and dirt settles on skirting boards too, and is removed much less often. And even greasy dirt can be found adhering to the skirting boards. So, how do we clean them? You can take advantage of various tools and products to undertake this chore.
In a video from Angela Brown Cleaning's YouTube account, the cleaning expert says the real sign of a clean home is clean skirting boards, and points out some of the methods she thinks are most effective for cleaning them.
- In the case of encountering encrusted dirt, which is perhaps also a little greasy, it is advisable to resort to using an excellent surface degreaser: this is a chemical product, of course, and it is generally enough to spray the boards and immediately wipe them down with a soft cloth to clean them thoroughly.
- If the situation is not too bad, even a simple duster will do the job.
Other methods recommended are those that involve the use of brushes and vacuum cleaners. You can use a brush with a long handle and long bristles (which will dislodge the dirt), passing a vacuum cleaner over the boards will suffice. It is also possible to buy vacuum cleaner brushes specifically for this task.
However, if you would like to prepare a DIY cleaning product, you can use Marseille soap, dissolving a couple of tablespoons in hot water and mixing it so that it fully dissolves in the water. At this point, you can add hydrogen peroxide and a few drops of an essential oil of your choice. The mix should have a liquid consistency, suitable for spraying. After spraying on the boards, and you can wipe the down with a microfiber cloth to capture the dirt and dust.
As for the frequency of cleaning, it is recommended to clean skirting boards every time you wash on the floor (and/or at least once a week).
