garbage disposal unit under the kitchen sink is a device that can be very useful for maintaining a proper level of cleanliness and preventing damage to the pipes due to unwanted obstructions. However, in order for it to work properly, it needs to be maintained.

The gaps between the blades are often filled with debris and food residue which can adhere to the internal surfaces of the appliance, and can be difficult to dislodge. Due to this, in a very short time, disgusting odors can develop and hygiene risks are increased.

Among the various solutions to easily clean a garbage disposal unit, the one involving the use of ice cubes has become popular on TikTok. Read on to find out more:

Among the many people who have tried their hand at this viral tip, is @andreablack926 who put the much-vaunted method to the test in the home she had just moved into.

The method is really very simple, and consists of only three steps:

  • Put plenty of ice in the sink and in the drain;
  • Flush with cold water;
  • Run the garbage disposal unit.

As the unit chops, the ice loosens the dirt stuck between the blades and in the gaps. In particular, in the video indicated, the dislodged dirt began to overflow into the sink itself, in a truly disgusting greenish slime.

The woman also pushed ice into the drain by hand, but this is absolutely forbidden: if you really need to drop more ice into the device, use a spatula or ladle (and never used flat or not stuck vertically in the drain, otherwise you risk breaking it and the garbage disposal unit). And you should never bring your hands close to the whirling blades.

Among the people who commented on the video is a famous cleaning professional on the platform, Vanesa Amaro, who does not recommend this method, saying that there are better alternatives.

Vanesa does not specify which ones, but one that is often recommended is this: pour a spoonful of bleach into the drain, without ice (which would make it splash everywhere), followed by a glass of water.  Activate the garbage disposal, and immediately close the drain with a plug.
