3 quick ways to fold socks: what's your favorite method?

We all have a favorite way of folding and storing our socks, which typically pairs them up so we don't lose one. In the journey socks take after being worn (passing through the laundry basket, into the washing machine, then the dryer), there is always risk them becoming mismatched or one of them getting lost. So, it is important to ensure that each pair stays together when stored in drawers or packed into a suitcase or sports bag.

We have all learnt to fold our socks, but perhaps there is a better method than the one we currently use. Well, if you didn't know, there are at least three different techniques, as you can see in a TikTok video.

The TikTok account of @thefoldinglady - which is dedicated to folding garments in the most orderly, compact and efficient ways possible - shows three ways to fold socks. Here is the first way:

  • Start with the socks side by side a flat surface, facing the same direction. The important thing is that the heel is flattened in the center, and not that it done protrudes on the side: they must form two, flat, straight strips.
  • Take one sock and put it from head to toe, upside down vertically, on top of the other one, making sure that the toe (facing up) is a couple of centimeters lower than the edge of the sock below it.
  • Starting from the bottom, fold the sock upwards.
  • Close the "package" by inserting the socks into the upper flap, which you will turn down.

  • Again, start with the two socks side by side, their toes facing downward, as in the previous method.
  • This time, without turning the one sock upside down, place it on top of the other one.
  • Start rolling up the socks.
  • Use the free top flap to secure the roll.

Tucked up

It is the most well-known method, but also the one that produces the most bulk.

  • Put the socks one on top of the top, but leaving the heel of each one sticking out (they should not be flattened as in the above methods).
  • Take one of the two upper edges, turning it with your fingers outwards so that it also engages the other sock.
  • Proceed by using your fingers to stuff both socks in this "pocket", until they are fully inside.
