5 great ways to use table salt for housework
You are cooking and an egg falls on the floor or on the counter. Sponges for washing dishes seem to get dirty quickly and can give off bad smells. These two examples are just two of the situations which happen in our homes, and although they are not insurmountable accidents, they waste time and test our patience.
In these cases (and more) we can make use of a valuable ally that is certainly already present in our homes: kitchen salt. This very common and very cheap ingredient, can be useful in many cases. Below, are some uses:
Stains in the bathtub
If your bathtub is no longer brand new it is likely to have some stains on the surface - the kind that won't come off with regular cleaning. Salt is one of the ingredients of a DIy remedy to use in cases where the other more common techniques don't work.
The things to have to hand are: salt, rubber gloves, a brush with nylon bristles, some turpentine and a glass container in which to mix everything.
Create a paste with 100ml of turpentine and two tablespoons of salt, put the gloves on and rub the paste on the stained areas. Then scrub with the brush. Let it act for a few minutes and rinse off thoroughly with hot water.
Sponges
We don't always remember to frequently wash and sanitize the sponges with which we wash dishes and various surfaces. But they are always in contact with dirt and water, becoming a cradle for germs and bacteria, and even mold.
From time to time, therefore, fill a small basin with 230 ml of hot water, 120 ml of white vinegar and 3 tablespoons of salt. Stir, soak the sponge overnight, then squeeze out and rinse thoroughly before using it again the next morning.
Broken eggs
If an egg falls on the floor, wait a bit before cleaning it up: pour a generous amount of salt over the mess which will make the egg's liquids thicken - then you can more easily remove the mess easily.
For iron or cast iron pans
Some traditional pots and pans, as well as the best grill pans, are made of iron or cast iron. This should always be cleaned without using soap. And one of the ways to scrape off crusted food residue, is to sprinkle the still warm (not hot) surface with salt and use a sponge (or even a potato) to scrub it in the critical spots.
Irons
If the foot plate of the iron is stained (with rust, or perhaps some residue of materials that have come into contact with the hot iron), turn on the iron, cover a shelf with parchment paper, put salt on it and then pass the iron over it. By ironing the salt, its abrasiveness will clean the foot plate.
