Cleaning faux leather shoes, especially classic white sneakers, is not always child's play with a guaranteed positive outcome. Usually, the fastest way to get them back to their original shape is to put them in the washing machine.

Washing shoes in the washing machine, however, has its pros and cons and requires a bunch of precautions to be taken to prevent them from getting damaged or not coming out clean enough. Among the most popular methods, one has appeared on TikTok, which seems to be really effective, safe and simple.

The method is illustrated in a video by @lacasadimattia, a digital creator well known on TikTok for clips related to do-it-yourself and household cleaning. The particular technique in question uses towels to put the shoes into in the washing machine.

Apparently, towels prevent the shoes from hitting the drum, acting as a shock absorber and increase the cleaning force. In any case, the method can be summarized in a few simple steps:

  • Pre-treat the shoes by spraying them with any degreaser or stain remover for white garments and putting, inside each one, half a cap of delicate bleach.
  • Let it act for ten minutes.
  • Place the shoes in the washing machine together with two white towels (or if colored, at least ones that won't run).
  • Add the detergent and set a program for delicate clothes at 40°C.

The result is truly a marvelous. If you want to see the procedure, step by step, we advise you watch the video in question (or take a tour of the other very useful contents provided by @lacasadimattia).

Obviously, this is not a method that we advise you use very often because it is well known that putting shoes in the washing machine frequently can, in the long run, damage some of their components. It is desirable to use this once-off technique for deep cleaning, and alternate its use with less aggressive methods.

Among the most frequently methods recommended are those that involve the use of products such as Marseille soap mixed with bicarbonate, toothpaste and lemon juice diluted with water. Vigorously scrub the surface of the shoes with one of these ingredients and a brush, let it act and rinse off by hand. These are very effective and excellent solutions to alternate with the washing machine.

Have you ever tried any of these techniques?
