A great way to polish your floors without effort

Washing the floors is one of the most frequently performed and necessary operations among our domestic chores. The floor always needs to be washed and disinfected. Sometimes, however, normal detergents do not leave it shiny enough, or make it dull after a while, with the addition of unsightly stains that make it look dirty even when it has just been washed. There are also alternative cleaners of superior quality and effectiveness which can, however, be very expensive.

Here we propose, instead, a cheaper but effective alternative to use. Just use two products that anyone has at home: vinegar and fabric softener.

By exploiting the degreasing properties of vinegar and the polishing properties of laundry softener, it is possible to obtain a perfectly clean and shiny floor. The steps to perform are few and simple:

  • Fill a mop bucket with hot water.
  • Dilute a cup of white vinegar and a scoop of laundry softener into it, making sure it is neutral and does not have an overly strong and pungent fragrance.
  • Dip in a mop (preferably a microfibre one), taking care to squeeze it out well, and begin to pass it over the floor evenly. Start at the back of the room, moving forward, and always follow one direction to avoid producing streaking.
  • Let the floor dry, if you can, for a few hours.

There are some further considerations to consider:
  • The remedy described here is mainly a tip to make the floor look shiny and should be used when the floor is not excessively dirty. To disinfect and remove dirt, traditional products are usually used or, for those who want something greener, alcohol diluted in water.
  • This is not a tip that can be adapted to all types of floors but, are rather for ceramic surfaces. For a parquet floor, for example, there are special polishing products you can use (or vegetable oils, such as olive oil).
  • We have described this procedure because it is fast, but it is also possible to carry out the operation in two steps: firstly, mopping the floor with water and vinegar; then with water and softener. The result will be just as satisfying.
  • Always try any remedy that is offered to you on a corner of your floor to make sure that the material reacts well to a certain treatment.
What do you think? Will you use this tip?
