In wood, aluminium or PVC, shutters are the guardians of our homes: they protect us from the elements; from the heat of the day (guaranteeing our naps during the day); and they provide security. They can also give a touch of character to our homes, if chosen carefully.

Too often, however, we forget about them, leaving them to collect dust and smog from the city and speeding up their deterioration. It is important to periodically clean them, to keep them looking good and to avoid extensive maintenance or replacement.

But how do we clean shutters properly? A few simple tips are sufficient - let's discover them together!

Regular dusting

First of all, to keep your shutters in perfect condition, you must always keep them dust-free. This operation can be carried out in the same way with all types of shutters, using a duster or a broom. You can also a vacuum cleaner, if there is a lot of dirt. It is advisable to carry out this dusting at least once every 7/10 days, to prevent it from becoming encrusted and making subsequent cleaning sessions longer and more tiring.

Of course, depending on their position and the materials they are made from, you may need to clean the shutters more frequently than the period stated above.

Let's start with the most delicate material: wood. Cleaning should be done about once a month with mild and diluted detergents - you can use dishwashing liquid diluted in water or Marseille soap. Avoid abrasive sponges and rough cloths - it is best to use a soft sponge.

To clean the most difficult corners, you can use a soft-bristled toothbrush.

After this, you can apply a coat of protective oil (olive oil is fine too), to polish and nourish the wood.

Aluminium shutters

Aluminium shutters need less frequent cleaning than wood, different depending on whether the aluminum is painted or not.

  • In the case of unpainted aluminum, a solution of hot water, vinegar and a little washing-up liquid can be used to clean and degrease them thoroughly. Then dry off with a cloth. Alternatively, you can clean using steam, always drying off properly to prevent streaking.
  • For painted aluminum, you need to pay attention to the paint, which can be damaged. You can use a solution of water and Marseille soap, or water with bicarbonate. In this second case, it will be enough to wipe the shutter with a cloth to dry them.

Shutters in PVC plastic

PVC shutters also need less frequent maintenance. Cleaning in this case is very simple: just use a neutral detergent or a mixture of 1/3 degreaser and 2/3 water. The important thing is that the product is not too aggressive and the sponge or cloths used are not abrasive.

For stubborn stains, a cloth soaked in denatured alcohol can be used. Afterwards, dry off with a cloth.
