Everyone has their favorite laundry detergent - maybe even a different product for each type of clothing to be washed. But  from time to time, one can run out of these products (or perhaps you may want to try a home alternative that is effective and cheaper).

It is possible, in fact, to prepare a DIY liquid laundry detergent, using ingredients that are easy to find and that we probably have at home (or, in any case, involve very minimal expense). Read on to find out more:

You will need:

  • 1 stick of soap suitable for laundry: both solid laundry detergents and Marseille or Castile soap will be fine.
  • One or more large bottles, such as those used for detergent.
  • 300 ml of white vinegar (wine or alcohol).
  • 20 grams of baking soda.
  • 800 ml of water, plus a bit more for later.
  • (optional) an essential oil you like

Preparation:

  • Boil the water in a large pot.
  • In the meantime, reduce the solid soap to flakes (grate it if it is more convenient).
  • When the water comes to a boil, pour in the soap, pit the heat on low and dissolve the soap into the water, stirring occasionally with a wooden ladle. It may take an hour or more.
  • Add the baking soda and mix well.
  • Add the white vinegar and mix again.
  • Remove everything from the heat and, if you want, add 20 to 30 drops of the essential oil and let it cool.
  • When the mixture is cold, pour it into the bottle filling them to the one third mark, and then add water for the rest. This way you are likely to end up filling multiple bottles.
  • Let the bottles rest for 12 hours and then the mixture will be ready to use, perhaps shaking a little before pouring it into the detergent drawer.

It is a simple method that allows you to save money and also customise your detergent with your favorite fragrances! Have you ever made laundry detergent using DIY recipes?
