A flower bed that runs along a border: use plants and borders to decorate the garden

It is not always possible to create areas full of shrubs or trees in the center of a lawn or  in the middle of the garden, so perhaps we give up trying to use plants that would tastefully decorate our green spaces, (and which would add a little glamour to what otherwise would remain a bland and anonymous plot of land).

The solution could therefore be to create a long and narrow flowerbed that runs along one (or more) of the borders, close to the fence or surrounding walls. It could be level with the ground, or slightly higher, or completely raised off the ground with a retaining wall: depending on the materials, the position and the plants, many different types can be created. Check out the ideas below:

If you plan to create a slightly sloping flowerbed (it's definitely nicer looking), be sure to create a border with bricks high enough to hold back all the soil - and mulch - that will inevitably slide down the slope.

If, on the other hand, you would like to create a minimalist styled flowerbed, with only a few plants in the middle of the gravel bed, it can be made level with the lawn and then flat borders, such as those made of concrete slabs, are enough.

And flat borders also work well with greener flower beds. It is always better to use an inconspicuous containment curbing material. And for the border, bricks are fine too.

Another idea is to create a step with stones, so the flower bed is a little higher than the ground, and then add a cobblestone border in front of the lawn or driveway.

Beds always look great when mulched with bark or other organic materials that are all in one color.

With a little inventiveness, you can create a miniature park in a strip of garden close to a fence.

And then comes the choice of plants for the beds: there are the lush combinations for areas in partial shade ...

... and colorful ones for plants that love the sun.

If all the flowers and bushes in the garden are (or will be) concentrated in one space, it will be worth studying the best combination of varieties for all seasons.

Even choosing just one type of plant can also be very elegant.

And the same approach can help you make even a simple driveway look spectacular!

Happy gardening!
