Keeping your car clean, just like the house, is the product of constant work and paying attention to a thousand little details. The passenger compartment of the car fills up with dirt all the time: what we bring in from outside on our shoes, the dust that flies in every time we open the windows, and the crumbs and spills from everything we eat and drink while going on our car trips.

Even more challenging, there are who use the car to transport animals. As these people know, pet hairs adhere to all surfaces and, in particular, to the seating upholstery. And all this dirt creates bad smells, especially when it's hot and the care has to stand in the sun for long periods of time. In these conditions it is evident, as soon as you get into the car, that your nostrils are assailed by strong or unpleasant odors - odors which not easily fought off using a simple deodorant (like one of those pine trees hung on the rear-view mirror or on the ventilation grills). So what can we do? There is a simple remedy that seems to work very well, and all you need is vinegar. Read on to find out more:

Viewable on TikTok, this home made remedy costs almost nothing and seems to be very effective - as can be seen in the video by @brightly.eco. All you need is any small bowl (plastic, ceramic, metal or glass) and distilled white vinegar (alcohol, basically; but in reality, the result should be the same even using wine or apple vinegar).

How to proceed:

  • Fill the bowl with the vinegar
  • Place it on a flat surface inside the car
  • Keep all windows closed and close the doors

That's it! After a few hours, or perhaps left overnight, the bad smells will disappear. Then you just need to remove the bowl and maybe ventilate the passenger compartment a little to get the vinegar smell to dissipate quickly (but it will, in any case, go away after a short while by itself).

Many online fans of this method say it works best if you place the bowl close to where your think the bad smells are emanating, such as near a stain on a seat.

You can see from this video, just how simple it is to use this deodorizing method.

If you also want to add a pleasant smell to your car, and you can use many different DIY remedies to do this: a very simple one is to pour a few drops (3 drops are enough) of essential oil of your choice on a wooden clothespeg and clip it to the fans of the ventilation system, or wherever you want. With essential oils, you can also always "refill" the spent air fresheners (by putting a few drops on, for example, the classic pine tree hung from the rear view mirror).
