DIY Anti-Yellowing Shampoo: The method is simple and inexpensive

Anyone who has blonde or gray hair, whether natural or dyed, knows how much a chore it is to keep it beautiful, neat and shiny. Especially in the case of dyed or bleached hair, after a few weeks, it tends to take on a straw yellow color, and can become dull and opaque - which completely detracts from the charm of the original hair color. As the hair changes its tone, it loses its shine and begin to look worse for wear.

This is also due to the fact that dyes and bleaches inevitably make the hair drier. In general, the "fading" of color occurs in conjunction with various factors such as frequent washing, atmospheric pollution, exposure to the sun and much more. Keeping a blond head of hair looking good for a long time is practically impossible - unless we use some tips.

Usually hairdressers and hair stylists recommend a periodic anti-yellowing treatment between one color and another. It is a shampoo (or a conditioner) containing purple pigments useful to neutralize the yellowing, eliminating the dull and opaque effect of blonde hair. In fact, yellow and purple are the opposite of each other on the color wheel and therefore they neutralize each other. The ideal would be to do this once a week. You can go to the salon or buy one of the many products on the market and do this at home. In both cases, the costs, however, are often significant.

A third alternative, therefore, is to create a DIY solution that is more natural and cheaper. Take a look at the method below:

What you will need:

  • White moisturizing shampoo or conditioner
  • Gentian's violet dye or violet food dye
  • A plastic bowl
  • A plastic spoon
  • A funnel
  • An empty bottle

Method:

Empty the shampoo or conditioner into the bowl. Add 2-3 drops of food coloring or a small pea-sized amount of food coloring. Stir until you get a blend of the desired shade of purple. You can add a few drops of blue dye if you need to eliminate the more orangey tones. Use the color wheel to determine which shade of purple you need to achieve based on your hair color. Use the funnel to transfer the resulting mixture into an empty bottle for storage.

Now you just need to try out your DIY anti-yellow toning shampoo or conditioner. It is advisable to use it, roughly, once every three washes. Frequency always depends on the type of hair and the color.

You must first wet your hair with warm water to allow the product to penetrate the roots more easily. Then proceed by applying the mixture from the roots to the ends - just as you would with any shampoo or conditioner.
Leave on for a period that can vary from a few minutes to an hour, depending on the color to be neutralized. However, do this with caution, paying attention to any adverse reactions and avoiding using more time than required.
Rinse with cold water to close the hair follicles and seal in the color. Now you are ready to show off your perfect blonde head of hair!
