It may happen that you have a guest room in your home that you never use - or perhaps it is one where some of the inhabitants of the house lived until recently and now is only used occasionally. And the same can happen with bathrooms. Of course, these rooms do not need to be included in a frequent cleaning routine: in fact, it is not necessary to go in to dust and wash the surface every day or even every week - but it is still necessary to remember to clean these rooms with a fixed regularity (even if the cleaning periods are spaced out). By doing this, when they return to service, you do not need to make a massive cleaning effort - and are always be ready for any eventuality.

So what are the interventions to be done to clean these rooms? Read on to find out:

As you can see in a video posted by @tidycademypro on TikTok, there are actually only a couple of chores to attend to in the regular rooms or bathrooms that are usually unused.

In the standard rooms:

  • Start by dusting all the surfaces, so that any dust on them falls to the ground.
  • Then vacuum the floor to remove all the dust and dirt that has collected on the surface.

In these cases, we would add, that it is always a good idea to take the opportunity to open the windows and air out the room. Furthermore, on a bed that is not used, you consider using a protective covering - therefore a bedspread or bedsheet can be used for this and, from time to time, this should be beaten out properly. This protection can be removed permanently as soon as you go back to using the room regularly again.

In the bathroom:

It is much more rare for a bathroom to remain completely unused. Maybe it is used for guests who come to visit for a few hours, or maybe it is a jump-off point, used to support the regular house cleaning routine (for example, where rags or mops are rinsed out).

  • If someone has used the bathroom, even just once, there will probably be splashes of water on the mirror and around the sink, and these will need to be cleaned as usual.
  • In any case, it is good to do a quick dusting of all the exposed surfaces.
  • Flush the toilet water to prevent the water in the bowl from stagnating;
  • In the shower or in the bathtub, it is best to rinse them out quickly with water only and remove the droplets with a squeegee.

Here, you can find the video demonstrating this technique.

The frequency with which to clean unused rooms is different from home to home, but basically at least once or twice a month is recommended in general. How do you deal with your unused rooms?
