The largest hand-knit sock in the world was created with over a thousand pieces
A world record resulting from the collective work of many people around the world: this is the story behind the largest sock in the world, entirely handmade with knitting needles or crochet.
It was assembled by a company from North Carolina, in the United States. Caron, is the name of the company which is recognized as the leader of this project, and the company decided to involve people from all over the world to give life to this epic creation. The reason? On the occasion of Christmas 2015 - the year in which the centenary of the American yarn brand was celebrated - Caron had the idea of bringing together people from the United States, Canada and Ireland to create an object that will go down in history. Here's what they did:
The sock was unrolled (literally!) for the first time in public on December 8, 2015 in Fayetteville, a city in North Carolina.
The size of the Christmas stocking is truly impressive: it has an area of 712.54 m², which makes it larger than a house!
To make this happen, Caron gathered people from various parts of the world, asking them to use the brand of yarns that would be celebrating 100 years of production in 2015: Caron United yarn. In doing so, it also promoted many charity initiatives, supported by the sales of its products (and yarn). For each ball of yarn sold, in fact, Caron donated 15 cents to the Children of Fallen Patriots Foundation, an organization that offers college scholarships and educational support to the children of military personnel who have died in service.
The Christmas stocking was thus born thanks to the collective effort of hundreds of people from all over the world, who sent their handmade pieces to the company (knitted or crocheted): in total, it took more than 1200 pieces to make the gigantic sock.
It was precisely this spirit of cooperation that amazed the representative of the Guinness Book of Records who witnessed and recorded the world record in 2015: "This sock is incredible - not only for its record size, but also for the fact that it is the pinnacle of more than 1200 works of art created by people who have offered their time and talent in donating a piece".
Who knows how many gifts could fit into such a big Christmas sock!
