Glass demijohns to decorate the home: 11 enchanting ideas to inspire you
It really seems that you can never go wrong to use a glass demijohn, (or even more than one), in the home's furnishings. A demijohn (also known a carboy) is a large, wide, rounded container with a narrow neck, usually made of glass and typically holding 20-60 litres of liquid. Their rounded and simple shapes can adapt to any style of interior design, and then there are also many shapes that they can come in: there are the more traditional ones, with the handle and sometimes the body is straight; and then there are those without any handles that have become more and more popular in recent years.
Online there are many advertisements from those who are selling these once neglected and humble containers. There are also shops that offer these giant glass bottles with more artistic shapes; and then there are those that make their own demijohns. They are all always very charming, and they only need to be kept well dusted to tastefully decorate any room.
It is nice to cluster more than one demijohn together, especially if they have different shapes and maybe even the color of their tinted glass has different shades.
Also combined with bottles and large glass ampoules, they become decorative compositions that are already beautiful to look at - even without filling them with flowers or anything else.
But nothing prevents you from putting various objects inside them: even battery-powered LED lights, which transform them into dreamy lanterns.
You might be lucky and find one that still has an old label on its surface ... Or you could recreate one yourself with a little creativity, giving it an antique look and applying it using vinyl (PVA) glue - in short, by doing a bit of decoupage.
Inside a demijohn, you can put cut flowers. Better still would be to use dried flowers or the leaves of some specific plants such those from palm trees, monstera (swiss cheese plant) or pampas grass.
The proturding foiliage, for example, can be of various colors. And you too could paint them too with spray paints.
What other plants can one use? Olive branches are always a winning idea, as is Pampas grass (Cortaderia selloana), mentioned earlier!
But even if you have some twisted, wooden branches that you find particularly decorative, they will look perfect in a demijohn.
If the demijohn is made of brown glass, you might want to try matching the type of dried leaves or flowers you put inside it. In green ones, silver-green leaves look great (like those of the eucalyptus, which are so popular these days).
Then, there are hose who are able to cut glass and can make large bell-shaped covers (closh) for food from any demijohn.
And there is no shortage of ideas for using demijohns as a terrarium ... But since putting the plants in a terrarium is a bit difficult, you could use the glass bell (described above) to cover pots that contain the pants!
