Feel like getting together with friends around a fire? Build a super-cheap brazier!
Braziers are a piece of garden furniture that don't always get the recognition they deserve. Less demanding (even cheaper) than an oven for cooking outdoors, they are useful to use as for a barbecue, but also to have a fire under controlled conditions - not only to cook something, but also to have a get-together with friends and family.
They are usually placed in the center of an area equipped with seats of some kind, and make an outdoor space really cosy, even on cooler evenings. To see if you are a "brazier" type, you can make one using rudimentary materials and cheap, easy methods, like the one also illustrated in a TikTok video on the @lifehacks.ho account.
You will need:
- Heat resistant bricks
- A metal rim from a car wheel - a fairly wide rim will be needed
- A metal burner cap/grid large enough to cover the hole in the centre of the rim
- Wire mesh such as that used for fencing
- Wire and pliers
- Stones and rocks
How to proceed:
- Create the central support pillar using the bricks, and (perferably) place the support on a stone or concrete surface.
- Place the rim on the top of the support pillar, centered and balancing properly and securely.
- Wrap the wire mesh around the support and rim, using the fencing wire and a pair of pliers. You will need to leave a gap of about 20 cm between the edge of the rim and the net.
- Fill in all the space in the net (the gap you just made) with stones and/or rocks.
- Close the hole at the center of the rim with a grid.
At this point you will only need to put wood into the rim, add a firelighter, and then you can roast marshmallows or whatever you want in no time!

Here are some other ideas from which to draw inspiration for building braziers in the garden:
A circular brazier made with stones, just like a wall built around a tree.
There are those who, preferring a more mobile solution, recycle the tubs of old washing machines into braziers.
Those who decide to install a fixed, permanent brazier (fire pit) in the garden, they usually create a dedicated space where to gather with their guests: chairs and even a pergola can be added that runs around the area, and where one can also hang lights.
And if you want to do things on a large scale, you could also consider having an area dug out and which is lower than ground level: this is then finished off with custom-made benches and seats that frame a brazier in the center.
