DIY furnishing means striving to find creative solutions, often also using materials or recycling unusual objects. A trend that has always found follower is that of providing furnishing solutions made from recycled wooden boxes / crates.

These boxes should be robust and large one -  the ones used for transporting wine bottles area ideal (or those which are now easily sourced and are for sale in many furniture shops, since they are also ideal containers for decorating open shelves). However, if we treat them as modular elements to be combined together in many different ways, you can use them to create furniture of various types, such as the ones you see below:

A pouf to rest your feet on is useful in any living room, and when it is made from a sturdy wooden box, it also becomes a stool for an extra guest.

A wooden box in good condition, divided into two, will create a couple of useful shelves for books and magazines, and is also suitable for creating a "bookcase" corner for the children's bedroom - or perhaps to keep at the ready for some frequently used cookbooks, manuals or tools in the room where we pursue our creative activities.

Simply mounted on the wall in a staggered formation in a corner of a room - these are the DIY alternatives to many designer shelves that have a similar format. And they can all be customized using paint or other decorations.

You could also wooden crates to furnish a hallway with a useful piece of furniture. Books, plants or even shoes could find a place in an unused corner of the house in this manner.

A stack of sturdy crates can support a wooden table which then becomes a rustic desk. And if the column of crates is continued up above the top of the desk, they will become useful as shelves for storing various objects (like stationery items).

Glue and nails, or even rope and cord: join the boxes securely together when you stack them, and you will get a solid, open-faced piece of furniture, to be used as a bookcase or even as a towel holder in the bathroom.

Two columns of wooden boxes arranged vertically and bridged by a straight rod (or a metal / PVC pipe, or even a sturdy branch), and here you have an original and rustic open wardrobe.

Under a DIY wooden bed frame - one that leaves enough space under its slatted base - wooden crates are the perfect storage items for keeping the room tidy.

They can also be used to cover an entire wall, with a bridge structure that emulates a bespoke bookcase that frames a door. Once filled with books or plant pots, this feature will have a fantastic visual impact.

Have you ever used wooden boxes / crates for any of your DIY furniture projects?
