Decorating with rope or twine is an ideal way to enrich the appearance of any object and transform it into a customised piece of furniture with a rustic flavor. Other times, it is the perfect expression of the marine design style, which not only is popular in seaside residences, but fascinates us with its exotic atmosphere and makes you dream of adventures on the sea.

With rope or twine, therefore, it is possible to create claddings for various objects and also to build furnishing accessories of all kinds, including chandeliers. Take a look at ways you could use these humble materials with gusto:

Among the most popular ideas to copy is that of shelves hanging on the wall, made with simple ropes and wooden boards. Drift wood can be used for an even more rustic look.

But also standard, treated or varnished wooden boards to create a piece of furniture that is more modern can look good.

There is no shortage of ideas for making light fittings with thick ropes, such as the ropes from boats, on which the cables with a hanging bulb are entwined. Or you could have wall brackets made with wooden arms on which the rope that holds the light is wound around.

To cover tables, or poufs, made from old tires, rope is perfect: it will make them look much more refined and you can also go wild with embossed doodles and designs.

A wooden trunk - or any other cylindrical support (perhaps even a metal bin) - covered with thick rope, becomes a fantastic side table to be placed next to armchairs and sofas.

Any lampshade, maybe even one that is a bit tatty, can come back to life with a simple cladding of twine that will give it a unique character.

Coasters, pot stands and mats: with lots of string / twine and hot glue you can make a myriad of beautiful and useful accessories.

Inflate a balloon, dip string in freshly diluted vinyl glue and wrap it around the balloon to create an intricate pattern, then brush the entire surface with the remaining glue and let it harden. When it is completely dry, just pop and remove the balloon to get a sphere to use with battery-operated lights or tealights: these are fantastic as lampshades or lanterns!

A table centerpiece created in minutes: a few glasses, candles, string and then add twigs, leaves or even cinnamon sticks.

Wind twine around any cheap, perforated plastic laundry basket and you'll make it look stylish in no time.

With a little patience, you could use twine to weave a kitchen mat.
