White walls are the most common in homes, and for good reason: they amplify the brightness of the rooms, allow you to focus on the shapes in the environment and become a blank canvas on which all the furniture, including decorations and accessories, stand out with much more contrast. However, they have one great downside: they must be cleaned from time to time to be able to preserve their crisp appearance, because even the slightest scuff or stain immediately becomes very visible on them.

A useful means to erase the dark marks that one often finds on the walls is by using a magic eraser (magic rubber), which is very easy to use and comes in handy to quickly remove the most obvious marks. There are also other methods to use, and we describe some of these below:

magic eraser is made from melamine resin foam, and in order to be used it should not simply be rubbed on the walls directly out of its packaging. First,  it must be soaked in water well and then squeezed out thoroughly, so that it is not dripping and is only damp. At this point, you can use it like a normal sponge on the wall, without worrying about the fact that it will give off some "crumbs", just like a normal pencil eraser.

As you can clearly see in this TikTok video from @lacasadimattia account, the magic eraser manages to make dark spots and scuffs that inevitably form on the walls of the house, disappear. In the video we also see that to completely finish the work, it is advisable to wipe the surface with a soft, slightly moistened cloth, so as to remove any residue.

If you don't have a magic eraser or want to try other methods, you can choose from the methods below:

  • A basin of hot water and Marseille soap or black soap (also known as African soap), in which you will dip a sponge or cloth, and then after having wrung it out, pass it over the wall to clean it. This method can be used in the case of walls painted with acrylic paint or washable wallpaper.
  • Use white vinegar on the most visible spots and stains, to be wiped off with a soft cloth.
  • When the stain is moldy, you will need to combat it with bleach. Always protect your hands and respiratory tract, and ventilate the room both during and after washing. Dilute 50 ml of bleach in a liter of water and spray on the stains, and after an hour, rinse off thoroughly. A useful, but less aggressive alternative is hydrogen peroxide, which kills spores. However, you may have to use it several times and keep it in on the marks for longer.
