There is nothing more annoying than remnants of paper and glue on glass jars and food containers: the labels (and the glue they are applied with) that adhere to the plastic and glass surfaces can be made to disappear completely using a simple DIY method that has also gone viral on TikTok.

On the profile of La Casa di Mattia, in fact, you can see a quick video that illustrates how to use soap and oil to remove, in just a few strokes, the adhesive that we find on glass jars, such as those of for jams, sauces and other products that we want to reuse at home. It also works with plastic food containers, or any general plastic or glass items that we want to remove the labels from.

This is a simple and quick method, and it is even more effective if you use on multiple objects in a single treatment. So, collect up a few jars and containers covered with labels which you want to remove, and then follow these steps:

  • Fill a basin or even the sink with hot water and a few drops of dish washing soap.
  • Let the containers soak in the water for 10-15 minutes, so that the water softens the paper part of the label.
  • Get a stiff brush, such as a dishwashing brush, and move the containers to the counter next to the sink or to a nearby work surface. Brush them a little to remove the bulk of the label, and ensure the peelings do not fall into the water.
  • Take some simple cooking oil (any vegetable oil will do) and drip it over the scraps of paper and glue that remain, wet the brush and brush it over the container, brushing until all traces of the label disappear. You may need to add a few more drops of oil as you go along.
  • At this point, you need to rinse the oil off, and so you should return to the sink, using a spray degreaser or even some dish washing soap to do this. Rub the surfaces well until all traces of the oil is gone. The jar or food container will be in perfect condition - as if there had never been a label on it in the first place!

A word of warning: if the containers are thin or not of the best quality, do not use water that is too hot, as it could deform them.
